The 5 Best Freshwater Fishing Lures

Although you may disagree with a lure or two and would add one of your own favorites, you would have to agree that these 5 fishing lures are at the very least among the 5 best fishing lures on the planet today. As I said earlier, if you consider yourself a serious fisherman, at least 3 of these fishing lures should be in your tackle box at all times.

There are many different types and styles of fishing lures that can be used to catch fish so is it possible that one lure is better than all the others? In truth, depending on the species of fish that you are fishing for, the type of water that you are fishing for those fish in, the time of the year that is is, and a myriad of other reasons, it would be impossible to say that one single fishing lure is "the best". What can be done however, is make a list of the "top 5" fishing lures, based on the more than 50 years of combined experience that we at JRW have and list the 5 best and most effective fishing lures that we have used in that time.

Below you will find the 5 best fishing lures that we personally have used and continue to use to this very day to catch a variety of species of fresh and salt water game fish. Any tackle box would be incomplete without at least three of these fishing lures in it, there's no doubt about it. As a point of reference the lures are being listed in no particular order.

  1. Rapala Original Floating Minnow - The Original Floating Rapala can be fished using a steady retrieve, stop-and-go retrieve or as a twitch bait and has long been known as one of the most effective fishing lures that have ever been created. The lures are available in seven sizes to match virtually any size bait fish that you want to emulate.
  2. Storm Hot-N-Tot - This baits wild searching action and fish-attracting wobble, makes it one of the top trolling lures used anglers everywhere (especially walleye anglers). This lure works equally when when simply cast and retrieved, but is especially effective when trolled at slow speeds for all manners of freshwater fish.
  3. Arbogast Jitterbug - No list of the 5 best fishing lures would be complete without at least one top water bait, and no list of top water baits would be complete without the Arbogast Jitterbug . Since its creation, the back-and-forth plodding action has made the Jitterbug a mainstay in the tackle box of fishermen chasing bass, pike and muskie. The steel double-lobed lip scoops the water and produces a plopping sound that fish just can't ignore. Use this lure when the water is as still as glass and you are in for a good time.
  4. Mepps Dressed Black Fury Spinners - Inline spinners are a great lure for almost any species of fish and Mepps is well known for producing some of the most effective inline spinners on the planet. With sized ranging from 1/16 to 1/2 of an ounce you are sure to find the perfect size lure for whatever species of fish that you are targeting.
  5. Dardevle Genuine Spoons - For nearly a century, these perfectly balanced spoons and their wobble action have helped land virtually every species of fish. They come in a myriad of fish attracting colors, making them the perfect fishing lure for a variety of fishing situations. Not having a Dardevle or two in your tackle box at all times is a big mistake.
